I love rock and gem shows! Nothing beats trade show pricing as well as seeing amazing specimens that you may never see anywhere else. It goes without saying that you could easily get carried away by all of the visual stimulation and lose track of your original intentions for crystal shopping!
Whether you shop at a show, at a metaphysical store, specialty rock store, or online, it’s always good to have a “game plan”, but it’s very important to remember the most crucial element when shopping for crystals and stones: Intuition.
And by intuition, I don’t mean succumbing to every single request the little “shopping devil” whispers into your ear; this is your ego and your lack mentality talking. No, by intuition, I mean listening to your inner guide (your ~ing as Gabby Bernstein calls it) and connecting to your Higher Self so that you can feel which crystals you resonate with the most at that moment, and would serve you best by coming into your possession at that time.
Step 1: Set Your Intention
The first thing you’ll want to do is ask yourself: Why are you shopping for crystals?
Is there a particular thing you would like to manifest in your life, such as more money, improved health, weight loss, happiness, clarity, etc.?
Are you buying crystals to decorate your home, or a particular room in your home? Are you hoping to affect your work or living space by invoking a particular kind of energy? For example, better sleep in your bedroom, laser sharp focus in your office, or protection around your entryway?
Are you looking to add crystals to your toolkit for your healing/body work practice?
Or perhaps it’s just that time of year and there’s an amazing sale/event and you don’t want to miss an opportunity for a great deal. That’s fine too!
Based on your intention, create a list of potential crystal friends. Notice that I said potential – it’s important to be flexible in your energy work. You might think that lapis lazuli is your missing link, when really, it’s that gorgeous piece of sodalite you’re meant to take home.
You could certainly specify the types of crystals that you’re looking for, or you could aim to look for crystals with certain qualities and colours. The latter allows for the most flexibility, but again I must remind you – use your intuition!
It’s important to check in and make sure you’re taking full advantage of the shopping experience. I believe that we always end up with the crystals that we’re meant to be with, but there’s nothing worse than that horrible “shoulda woulda coulda” feeling when it comes to shopping for anything, if only you had remembered that you needed it.
Step 2: Set a Budget
This can be a real problem, especially in the spiritual community. Lots of poor, misguided souls tend to max out their credit cards under the banner of being free spirits that operate solely from their inner compass. Don’t let that be you!
Be smart. Money is no less spiritual than your crystals are, and should therefore be treated with the same amount of respect.
Trust that whatever you need will come to you within the budget you set for yourself. This goes for anything, by the way – not just crystals!
Step 3: Listen to Your Intuition!
Do you get it yet? Go with your gut. Feel your way around.
This is not as complicated as it sounds. Don’t expect to hear an ethereal Maya Angelou-sounding voice boom from the heavens telling you what crystal to buy (unless that’s normal for you).
You know that voice inside that says, “That one! Look at that one!” and that inner knowing that seems to say, “Hmm, yes, I like it”? That thing that seems like nothing more than a feeling? That’s your intuition.
But wait a minute – isn’t your intuition easily confused with the ego/shopping devil? It certainly can be! Really, the best way to know the difference between your inner guide and your ego is to meditate regularly. But in a pinch, allowing your mind to calm down by focusing on your breath is usually enough to help you hear your intuition more clearly.
This is why intuition is the third step in this process. If you’re having a hard time hearing your intuition, then setting your intentions and your budget beforehand will help you make wise choices.
Another way that you can use your intuition is to sense the energy of the crystals. When scoping out a potential crystal, place it in your non-dominant (receptive) hand, and notice how the energy feels. You may feel warmth, tingling, or even a buzzing, electric-type of energy if it’s the one. Or you will just “know”. If it doesn’t feel like anything, then try another crystal and notice its sensations.
Another energy sensing technique is to simply hold your hands above the crystal (around its aura). If it feels good to you, then perhaps it’s the one!
A note on auras: Just because a crystal is small, doesn’t mean that it isn’t emanating a gigantic energy field, and vice versa! The key to energy sensing is to keep the mind open and free of judgment and expectation.
Crystal shopping is always a fun time. Here’s to many blessings on your crystal journey!
