Reiki 101: What is Reiki? by Timmie Horvath - Sacred Wellness School of Healing Arts - Edmonton Reiki Training, Crystal Healing, and Aromatherapy

Reiki Defined

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy healing modality that creates deep relaxation, relieves pain, and balances mind, body, and spirit.

The word “Reiki” is Japanese, meaning universal (“rei”) life force energy (“ki”). The Japanese word “ki” is synonymous with “prana”, “qi”, and “chi”.

Rei means universal, or omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time).

Ki is the life force energy that exists in all living things, including humans, animals, and plants. The word “ki” is synonymous with the words “prana”, “qi”, and “chi”.

Ki flows throughout your energetic or etheric body, including your meridians and chakras. Your energetic body is also comprised of Ki. When the flow of Ki is strong, you experience health and balance in mind, body, and soul.

How Reiki Works

The practice of Reiki stimulates and strengthens the flow of Ki in your body. It clears and balances your chakras; releases energetic blockages; and allows your body to do what it does best: heal itself.

Reiki works based on the principle of vibrational resonance; that is, when opposing vibrations collide, the stronger vibration will eventually dominate and the weaker vibration will either rise or fall to meet it.

Since Reiki is Universal Life Force Energy, and is therefore of the highest vibration, channeling Reiki by introducing it into your energetic body will cause your overall vibration to lift. You will literally be “vibin’ high”! This works whether you are channeling Reiki to yourself, another person, a room, an animal, and even plants!

This shift in vibration will cause positive change in your energy body, which will eventually manifest in all aspects of your life.

The Benefits of Reiki

The benefits of Reiki are vast, and are physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual. Reiki is the ultimate holistic modality, as it always benefits all aspects of our health at any given time, even when it seems like it focuses on one particular issue. For example, you may practice Reiki to relieve physical pain, but it will also work to reduce your stress and improve your mood.

Because Reiki works by stimulating the flow of Ki in your body, it’s exact benefits and therapeutic actions are almost impossible to specify. Any change in your energetic body will eventually be reflected in your mental, emotional, and physical bodies as well; but to what degree, and when, is highly individual.

However, you can be assured that the practice of Reiki will benefit you in a holistic way. The benefits of strong, flowing Ki, include:

  • A strengthened immune system
  • Clarity of mind
  • Emotional resilience
  • An improved ability to bounce back from stressful situations
  • Improved intuition
  • A stronger connection to Source

Many modalities and therapies exist solely to keep the flow of Ki strong in your body. Practices such as Yoga and Acupuncture focus on creating movement in the body in such a way that will release energetic blockages.

Reiki is holistic: it works on the body, mind, and spirit by stimulating a person’s own natural healing abilities. The blocked emotional and physical elements that lead to illness and disease are cleared. Reiki is neither positive nor negative; it is in fact the highest and most profound vibration of life. Divine in origin, it allows us all to become one with all things alive in our world. Reiki is pure unconditional love and joy bringing all who experience and embrace it principles together in harmony.

Regular contact with Reiki will bring your mind, body, and spirit into balance.

Reiki treatments can be performed with the hands on or off the body, and even at a distance; they are also free of any side-effects. Like all other forms of energy healing, Reiki distance treatments and attunements are just as effective as those performed in person.

The Origins of Reiki

Reiki was “re-discovered” at the end of the nineteenth century by Dr. Mikao Usui, who originally named his system, Usui Shiki Ryoho, or the “Usui System of Natural Healing”. One of the many ways that Reiki practitioners demonstrate their credibility is by showing their Reiki lineage; that is, tracing their Reiki Masters back to the original Reiki Master, Dr. Mikao Usui himself. All students of our Reiki Practitioner Certification will be able to do the same!

Who Can Learn Reiki? Do I Need to Be Psychic, etc.?

Absolutely anyone can learn Reiki! The skills and techniques associated with Reiki are simple and easy to learn. Small children and adults can equally comprehend and incorporate this ancient form of healing into their lives.

It is a common misconception that one needs to be psychic, empathic, extremely intuitive, able to see ghosts, etc. in order to be able to practice Reiki. This is simply not true – like I mentioned, Reiki is a natural energy healing technique that is open to anyone.

Also, while certain people are certainly born with strong psychic gifts, the ability to “be psychic” can actually be learned! It is worth noting that Reiki and working with energy does increase your sensitivity to energy, and heightens your intuitive abilities. Everybody is different – it usually happens over time and with practice, but some people experience a very noticeable difference in their intuitive/psychic awareness.

What is an Attunement?

A Reiki attunement is a beautiful and simple initiation ceremony which allows you to become a channel for Reiki energy. Reiki is omnipresent, but, much like tuning into a radio station, people need to be attuned to Reiki. Radio stations exist whether you choose to listen or tune into them or not; and Reiki is accessed when you set your intention to do so.

Reiki attunements can only be performed by Reiki Masters. You will receive an attunement during each level of Reiki training. During your Level 1 Training, you will be attuned to Reiki energy as a whole, and will be able to channel Reiki simply by setting your intention. In further levels, you will be attuned to different Reiki symbols, which will “supercharge” your ability to channel Reiki, and allow you to direct the energy in more specific ways, such as across distance and time.

Reiki attunements last a lifetime, and never “wear out” – even if you choose not to practice Reiki for years! I myself have received many attunements, and regularly attend Reiki workshops and shares during which I get re-attuned; the attunement feels wonderful on an energetic level, and I encourage you to enjoy the opportunity for a a re-attunement whenever it presents itself. However, your Reiki channeling abilities will not change with each attunement – you only ever really need one per level!

Are There Any Prerequisites to Reiki Training?

There are no prerequisites to Reiki Level 1. Reiki Level 2 requires Reiki Level 1, and Reiki Level 3 (Master Teacher) requires Reiki Level 2.

Some schools are particular about where you received your prior training, and some others will only accept prerequisites if you studied with them. At this time, I have an open policy in regards to accepting Level 3 Master Teacher applicants, as long as there is proof of certification.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner is a life-changing decision, and will impact your life in ways you have yet to imagine!
