Cancer (June 21 – July 23)

The Zodiac Season of Cancer is the ruled by the Element of Water, thus completing the the first elemental cycle of the year (Aries – Fire, Taurus – Earth, Gemini – Air, Cancer – Water).

Cancerian people are known for being sensitive, empathic, and nurturing. Their Water element is evident in the tears that they easily shed; their life-giving and nourishing tendencies; and their sheer force of their will, which like any body of water, is an unstoppable force when appropriately channeled.

This Sign’s planetary ruler is the Moon, with all of her changeable, Goddess-like, iridescent glory! This is the Light side of the Water element, as opposed to the Dark side, which we will learn about during Scorpio Season (Scorpio is ruled by Pluto – ’nuff said, ha!).

Cancerian Energy rules the torso and digestive organs, particularly the stomach. The wellness focus for this time of year is one digestive health and core strength. The Cancerian tendency is to hold emotions in and to suffer in silence, which often manifests as stomach upset and can sometimes lead to chronic digestive issues.

Nervousness and excitement are often felt in the stomach – often referred to as your “gut instinct”. Whether it’s situational anxiety (e.g., an exam) or the bliss of butterflies (e.g., date night), you’re likely to feel it in the pit of your stomach. A healthy physical and emotional digestive system is one that keeps moving: Whatever comes in is absorbed and assimilated, and eventually comes OUT. As it is with food, so it is with emotions! Metabolize (i.e., learn from) your feelings, and then eliminate (i.e., express) them in a productive way.

I have another important wellness tip for you, presented by the Element of Water 🙂 Keep your water intake high! Adequate water intake will ensure a healthy digestive system, clear skin, lots of energy, and mental clarity. And, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, keeping water close by will ensure that you and your kiddos stave off dehydration and can help prevent heat stroke.

Yoga & Fitness for Cancer Season

Cancerian people are homebodies, and this is a great time to establish a home routine/practice. And if you’re traveling? Make like a crab and take your “home” with you via your fitness! There are so many ways to get an amazing workout in using only your body weight. At most, you’ll have to pack a light yoga mat – these days, you can even find travel mats that can fold up nicely in your suitcase.

The ideal practice for this Cancer Season is Pilates, as it teaches you how to properly engage your core as you move your body through its full range of motion in all directions. In a similar vein, you may also want to try Fusion Fitness, Yoga with Weights, PiYo, Flow, and other mind-body fitness workouts. The smooth motion of these exercises is so in tune with the dominant Water energy in the air!

Crystals for Cancer Season

Cancer Season is brimming with the energy of the Divine Feminine and Sacred Yin archetypes. Crystals that will help you attune to this energy include:

  • Moonstone
  • Selenite
  • Howlite
  • Turquoise
  • Celestite
  • Pearl
  • Rose Quartz

However, if you’re looking to calm down emotional waves and ground down, you can balance your energy with stones such as:

  • Green Moss Agate
  • Red Jasper
  • Smoky Quartz
  • Petrified Wood
  • Black Tourmaline

Essential Oils for Cancer Season

First of all, I highly advise against ingesting essential oils, even if you’re using them to ease digestive upset. Read more about Essential Oil Safety here. That being said, I have plenty of beautiful essential oil recommendations for you!

To ease stomach upset, mix a few drops of these essential oils with a carrier oil (such as grapeseed or sweet almond oil) and rub into your stomach in a circular motion:

  • Fennel
  • Peppermint
  • Black Pepper

Essential Oil Safety Tip: These oils can irritate your skin if applied neat (undiluted), so always dilute them with a carrier oil or lotion. Alternatively, you could pick up a pre-made blend, such as Tum-Ease by Rae Dunphy, DiGiZen by Plant Therapy, or Tum Ease by Aromatics International. For babies and kids, I personally love Tummy All Better by Plant Therapy – my boys love it!

To boost your mood and calm your mind, diffuse or make an inhaler blend with the following essential oils:

  • Lavender
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Orange
  • Juniper Berry
  • Grapefruit
  • Rose Otto*
  • Jasmine*

*As essential oils, Rose and Jasmine are quite cost prohibitive. However, their hydrosol counterparts are much more affordable and have the same effects – simply mist your face and take a deep inhale!

I hope you enjoyed these tips and that they’re valuable to you over the Summer 🙂 As always, I’m always here for you if you have any questions. Write me at timmie@sacredwellness.co or leave a comment below!
